Interesting information about the kerosene on the water. I came across a gentlemen at an agricultural field day in VIcotria a few years back, They have developed a silicone type product that can be placed on water and spreads out like oil does, but has no taste, is non-toxic, and does breakdown in time.

This product reduces evaporation by up to 80% it is claimed. It also renders the water impossible for mosquitos to penetrate and lay their eggs. I wonder if it would be useful for eliminating malaria in 3rd world regions in particular.

I also think about ecology altering products like this. For every action nature produces a reaction, and if water cannot evaporate does this harm precipitation in other areas? Just as Lake Eyre fills, it's waters are evaporated and fall across the Mallee and NSW Riverina area, as we can experience this current winter with almost drought breaking rain and a winter that I have not experienced truly since the 1970's.
